High as a Kite

High as a Kite is a documentary film by director Steve Kovacs.

I was soaking in the sun at Aquatic Park after a brisk swim on June 26, 2013. Close by, a few people in bathing suits were opening a bottle of champagne. What were they celebrating? Carol's 80th birthday. Ron spoke admiringly of her. "She is quite a character. Someone should make a movie about her." I’ve made movies before, so I volunteered.

A year later, we shot her 81st birthday. Then, every few months I would drop in on her with my former student and cameraman Adan Pulido. We worked with her in the garden, got in her way as she prepared her meals, followed her on her bicycle to her favorite spot on Ocean Beach, helped build her fire, jumped in the waves, and went hiking with her on Mt. Tamalpais.

There was no rush. It took us six years. Finally we had a film. Come and enjoy the cold water, the hikes, the stories and Carol's company, as we did over the years.
